Day 19: Deer portrait

I dream of deer quite often, and have a strong fondness and respect for those delicate and beautiful creatures. Oh what a dream come true would it be to see them closely in their natural habitat! If we were living in the world of Harry Potter, my expecto patronum spell might just produce a deer, who knows.

I've done a deer inspired make-up once before in this blog, but this look goes a step further. It is Yuletide after all and Satan's Santa's reindeer will soon glide against the night sky in the imagination of all little children. The antlers are genuine (thrifted!) reindeer bone and I've been itching to try this hairdo ever since and even long before that. I kind of wish those antlers were genuinely pushing out of my skull's bone tissue!

I'm planning to create this look again, with a better light and a better time and hopefully someone else than a mere ghost behind the camera.

My animal side is a suitable portrait for this evening, for today I did something connected to it that made me incredibly happy inside out. I've always wished to regularly donate money for nature preservation organizations, but thought that as a poor student it would take too much when sometimes it's hard to support even your own life. That idea happens to be total, complete and utter rubbish. Living in the western world I always have something extra to give away, always. It is only a matter of small choices, skipping a pair shoes or a bottle of wine makes the extra money easily available.

And so, starting now, I'm giving the money I can every month to WWF. One of the best decisions I've ever made. Highly recommended. ♥

  1. I like these pictures, the antlers look really cool :)
And great that you are donating to the WWF, I used to work for them and they do a lot of great stuff.
Are you just making a donation or are you doing the adopt an animal program?

    1. Thank you! I guess I'm adopting the rain forests if one can say that, since I'm donating money to that program monthly. It was SO damn hard to choose between the programs, I wish I could have picked them all! But my spouse is donating to the tiger/elephant/rhino trio against poachers, so we split our goals to get news letters from both. :)

  3. You really look like Chelsea Wolfe today.
I used to give money monthly to WWF but the last months I couldn't, but you are right, it is really good to help.

    1. Oh, I don't see how but thank you! I hope that one day I could do more than donate, it would be great to do some field work.

  7. You look amazing as alway. It's an excellent idea for a photoshoot. the makeup is beautiful.
A bit silly, but when I saw your horns I was reminded of something that I experienced yesterday driving into town to buy christmas presents. A little red car in front of mine with deer horns attached to the roof rack on each side of the car, looking like little Rudolf. It made me smile all the way to town. :D

    1. Thank you so much! Sadly the makeup isn't really showing in these photos, I took a few closer snaps but was way too tired to leaf through them last night, that's why there's so little photos here. But I'm definitely going to do this again, and promise to take closer pictures that time. :)

And hahaha, I love strange things like that! Silly is good!

  10. The last picture looks so amazing, your hair almost looks like black fur :)
How did you manage the bones to stay on your head?

    1. Oh thank you! :) I just tied my hair very tightly around the bones and used a lot of bobby pins to fasten the whole bundle.

  11. Where did you buy these antlers?
I'm looking for one like that for a long time. :(

    1. They were thrifted, like I wrote there. :) Bought second hand for a couple of euros. You should check out recycling centers and flea markets around you, it took me a long time to find these but it's always possible!

  12. Oh I love this, you look amazing! I adore how you've sculpted your face using shadows to appear more angular and deer like, it reminds me of a female Herne the Hunter! I too have a fondness for deer and would love to own a real antique taxidermy deer head some day! I'm happy you've made the decision to donate to the WWF, me and my other half have been doing it for 3 years now! ~♥~

    1. Thanks so much! The makeup was much better on a closer look. :) I was just too tired to go through all the photos and post closer snaps here, but I'll do that the next time I use a similar look.

I love deer and taxidermy is cool too, but insects and found/second hand bones is as far as I've ever gone. A stuffed head on the wall would probably just make me sad, even though it would've been dead for decades. :< But if it had died on natural causes, then maybe! And WWF is great, I'm super happy about my decision!
