A few April pieces

April flew by with minimal blogging, so I thought I'd share a couple of joys from the past month. I had the best of luck with flea markets in April! You know the feeling when you go second hand hunting with a specific thing in mind, and you find just that? That happened so many times I can't believe it. Here's a pick on some goodies that I found only last week, including a vintage lace collar that camouflages me with innocence, two books that I've been meaning to read, frames for my wall projects, another bell jar and a nice stack of other treasures. I wonder what May will bring my way!

I spent countless hours in the woods in April, remembered how lost I feel when nature is not constantly near. I only wish I could live in the middle of a city and the woods at the same time.

Hanged out with Nana, a darling black whippet. (She reminded me so much of Nipsu, the Moomin character as all Finns may know!)

The big thing about this encounter is that I wasn't allergic at all to her, no matter how much I rubbed my face against her silky black fur. This gives some light hope of having a dog at some point in my life! I'm seriously having the worst case of dog fever, must be driving everyone around me nuts with my daydreaming after huskies and other precious canines. I could die from joy each time I get to pet and hug puppies on my walks.

Had many date nights with the dear one, this one was Cthulhu Mythos themed. Vegan Elder Sign cupcakes, cold brews, 20's jazz and horror soundscapes on the background and the only board game that I can actually enjoy and focus on; Arkham Horror. Nothing says romance like fighting against the elder gods and cultists while desperately trying to prevent the apocalypse, right? The great thing about the game is team work, you don't fight against other players and if you try to go solo you will likely just lose your mind or trigger the end of the world. A true treat for any Lovecraft lover!

And best of all, I FINALLY earned myself a new laptop. This is a huge thing for me and very good news for the blog too! Working on a deeply broken down machine was simply too tiring, so most days I never even opened the wreck. But this beauty works like a charm (plus the red glow is wonderfully diabolical). It's been years since I've had a new computer so I'm ridiculously happy about this! I couldn't even remember how it felt to be able to access files quickly and edit photos without your Photoshop crashing every 30 seconds.

The only flaw is that the HD screen makes all photos look like crap and I can't fix that, haha. All my photos are in a fixed size so they should appear normally here, but Blogger expands and chops them oddly. At least on my screen, I hope you're not seeing what I'm seeing!

  1. Nana is definitely a dead ringer for Nipsu (I know the character as Sniff in English, how lovely to know his "real" name!). I hope you get to have a dog of your own at some point, I've been dreaming of a pet for myself lately so I understand your longing. Congrats on the treasure hunting too!

    1. I can't imagine how the series sounds in English, I'm so accustomed to the Finnish names and voices! :) Nana is a sweetheart (she's my brother's girlfriend's dog) and it was so much fun to see all those hints of Nipsu in her facial expressions and gestures.

Unfortunately my longing for a dog companion will continue for some time, as I can't have a dog at the moment. But it's such good news that I'm not allergic to all breeds!

    2. Actually it's "really" Sniff, since Tove Jansson wrote in Swedish, the second official language in Finland. :)

  2. That's great you have a new laptop, can't wait for more posts! :)
'Arkham Horror' is a fine game, but have you played 'Mansion of Madness'? http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=136&esem=1 It's at least as dark, and for me (and my friends, as we play together) much more interesting - and just so beautiful! I strongly recommend :D

    1. I've heard of Mansion of Madness, but my botfriend said that it's a stripped down game compared to Arkham Horror, is this true? I enjoy the complexity in AH, but I sure will keep Mansion of Mandess in mind. :) It looks well made and it would be nice to give it a try!

    1. It may have something to do with the place we're born in, to have a certain sense of belonging in similar surroundings. I was raised in a very small town and the woods were always near, so they feel like home.

  4. Lady moth! You little innocent bee that once told me she didn't like board games! I should have spent more time to convince you to try it, as it has nothing in common with other board games. I'm glad you like it, it's one of my favorite games. I can't advise you enough to give a try to Elder sign, I'm pretty sure you would adore the card titles and the small stories that go with it. I do <3 I can't believe how much we have in common. Another addition to the list is the dog obsession. I spent the last three days on the north coasts of France and everytime I saw a dog, I melted with desire. The longing was increased by the beauty and wilderness of the place. I wish I could be there alone with my own moomin friend.
Is there any way I could share a few more words with you than the ones I have in reply to my posts? It was a pleasure to read you, I deeply hope your new computer will give you, and us readers by the same time, the chance to converse more.

    1. Haha, I remember saying that to you Celine! And that time it was true! I don't usually enjoy board games (well, Trivial Pursuit can be fun with my siblings, I do love quizzes), as sometimes I'm having a hard time concentrating on things like that. My mind likes to wander too much when I need to focus on things I don't genuinely like, I don't know if I should blame creativity or some form of ADD for that. :D But my beau bought Arkham and the theme is so close to my heart that I can easily play it for hours without yawning. I think that playing the 20's horror soundtrack on the background (you can find playlists on Youtube) really increases the immersion in the game, have you tried that? Very much recommended.

I know that melting feeling, there's a girl living in the same area with a cream and white coloured husky puppy, and I could die each time I get to see or pet that glorious little beast! The longing for a dog friend is almost aching, I'd especially love to give a home to a rescue pup.

You can always reach me through comments, or through a private channel by emailing me at mothmouth.blog@gmail.com. But a fair little word of warning: I don't check that mail daily so it might take some time to answer messages there, but I always try to answer each one. :)

Hmm, do you mean that post about a year ago where there were apples and a photo of an iMac? That was my former school's computer, I've never had an iMac. :) Although I'd like to have one, would be much easier to work on a big screen.

And thank you! It's just bright green sugar frosting (the photo is desaturated so the colour doesn't really show), and the cupcakes are dark chocolate cupcakes.

  16. Hei!
Automaattinen parannus on asetussivun alalaidassa – siirrä täppä kohtaan Pois.

  20. Dear! Congratulations on your purchase of a new computer friend!:)
And I'm very glad to hear that you play Arkham Horror. It's a terrific, exciting and disturbing game. How often our detectives were devoured and the world completely destroyed by the Elders :) Or how sweet was the victory in the unequal fight with Cthulhu! But let me recommend another wonderful game - Fury of Dracula. I think the vampire theme is interesting for you too)
And as the last word - new photos are amazing.

    1. My thanks, sweet Grace! I still haven't fought against Cthulhu, as we pick the Elder one randomly and somehow always seem to land on Shub-Niggurath or Nyarlathotep, those aren't easy to beat either. But I'm sure that I'll be fighting against Cthulhu too someday! And thanks for the tip, I'll keep the game in mind. :)
