Day 5: Now winter dances here

Today my calendar reveals some sugar frosted trees and snowfall for all of you who don't have this cold substance laying on the ground or frost flowers decorating your window. Hope you enjoy the sight! I also threw in some pieces from today's completely thrifted school look, I gave a presentation regarding the subject of my thesis. I feel there's still hope for me in that matter, all I now need to do is draw, draw, draw.

Somehow the cold always manages to surprise and at first it chills me to the marrow of the spirit, but then I remember how utterly beautiful winter is. All the world looks so clean and serene, and I don't believe I could live in a country without winter, at least not for very long. In Finland the quicksilver has already hit -20ºC once and I fear it keeps on dropping, but this feels like a picnic compared to the -33ºC we had last winter. And will have this year too, I believe.

  2. It's the first -20ºC that's the hardest, I find. And by the end of the winter, -20º almost seems warm compared to the -40º we'll have endured at least a few times. But it is beautiful and I agree it would be difficult to live without it. Ask me again in February and see if I feel the same way ... ;o)

    1. Haha, you can ask the same thing from me! By February I'm usually sick with winter and the biting frost, it would be better if the winter could only last a couple of months but it always lingers on for at least five..

And you're right, the first cold days always feel the hardest! I guess it's just that the body hasn't gotten used to it yet.

    1. I'm always glad when someone recognizes the quotes! ^^ It's a beautiful song, though not my favourite from them. I love winter too, but I wish it could be a little shorter and not so incredibly freezing.

  5. Beautiful photos. It doesn't snow where I live (Melbourne, Australia). We think a cold winter's day is anything under 10ºC, so I cannot even begin to comprehend how cold -20 is, let alone -30!

We're now in summer, where our temperatures sometimes near - or exceed - 40ºC. It's not pleasant and everything looks dried out and dead. Winter is so much prettier, whether it snows or not.

PS As a regular lurker, I have to say I'm happy to have you posting every day.

    1. Thank you! Happy to hear that people enjoy this calendar thing :)

I'd like to experience a winter like yours some day! These extreme weather conditions are always hard, -35ºC feels like every cell in your body crackles like ice and in the summer I always feel like dying when it's +35ºC outside. Sometimes I wish I could be exothermic like lizards.

    1. Haha, that's so true! Well, almost. ;) Finns are crazy, sometimes you can see people without hats or mittens even in the coldest days. Not me though, my goal is to stay warm and alive, brrr.

  11. Who would listen to your presentation when they could concentrate on looking at you? :) But are you not cold in that outfit?

I don't think I could live without winter, either. Lovely photos.

  16. Do you have any tips on how to stay warm in this freezing Winter? Do you wear some special tights or a coat that is extra warm? As far as I can tell, putting layers of clothes on seems to be the best (and not necessarily elegant) option :)

    1. Layering is the key, it's definitely the warmest option. I always put an extra scarf on my shoulders and head in the coldest days, the most important thing is to stay warm, not elegant. ;) But maybe I should make a post of this! I also have one secret weapon that I bought from a vintage fair, black woollen thigh high socks from the 50's. The quality is super and they're very warm!
