Dances with Wolves

"From beasts we scorn as soulless,
in forest, field and den,
the cry goes up to witness,
the soullessness of men"

-M. Frida Hartley

I look just like Jon Snow here, haha!! Game of Thrones Season 3, please come soon.
Winter jacket, gloves and tights are from mom, biker boots are my sister's, dress is also second hand and the bag is from Lindex, I think.
Silver jewelry (not really visible here) from MoonRavenDesigns and Fashionology.

I've been visiting my childhood home with my sister for a few days now, and will depart for my own home tomorrow. My dear mom was kind enough to snap these winter stroll outfit pics for me although she pretty much hates being on both sides of the camera! For starters I'd like to highlight that the collar in the jacket is 100% fake. I would NEVER wear genuine fur, not even in vintage. Never. The jacket is made of recycled wool and polyester and I got it from my mom through H&M's discount rack. So I guess double thanks to her are in order.

And now for my other subject.

Something horrible happened in this town a while ago, something that makes my blood boil like hellfire. And I wish to share the cause of this feeling, regardless of usually keeping this blog mainly for shallow things.

Some local hunters were caught red-handed by the law while illegally preparing to kill wolves. You know, those painfully beautiful and wise animals that have every right to coexist in this northern land. This however happens to be something many people in my country can't understand. Innocent wolves are slaughtered day by day, merely for the nudges of fear in the feeble hearts of men. While fighting against poachers in other countries I almost forgot how this happens in my own one as well! It's tragic to witness how homo sapiens hasn't evolved from the caveman days, but still trembles in the unnecessary fear and scorn towards other animals, reaching for security in guns because their closed minds can't wrap around the beauty and diversity of nature. No creature is as dangerous as a human suffering from fear.

There's no reason to hunt these magnificent beasts to the brink of extinction (there's only about 120 individuals left here!), there's nothing that could ever justify this persecution. Makes me ashamed to belong to this race, but I still hope that some day compassion and a wider form of intelligence will reach these people, I do. I just wish I could do more to help.

My rant, for now, ends here. I wish you all a good and peaceful night,
and I hope that the future generations might still be able to hear the wolf's howl slicing the air.

  2. I have also thought very much about this killing of animals because they come to our territory.

I think it's very unfair that we slaughter innocent animals that have only doing whats natural to them, example killing a pet for food or just to defend their territory.

We have forgotten that we should live side by side with nature. Even though it is sometimes unfair to us.

People have forgotten that it is us, the people who has come to territories of animals...

    1. I agree with you so much, animals have an equal right to have their natural territories, it is we who invade them. We should do our best to coexist with other species, right now humankind acts like a virus, spreading on new areas and leaving just destruction in the wake. I hope this will change now and in the future. :)

  4. Many animals are slaughter here in my city, and in the place I live for be food, I'm vegetarian awhile, I have sense of this animals feel, cry, and the people continue to hurt this little and innocents lifes just cause they like the tast of meat. Is sad too, is sad how we treat these animals, using for tests, fashion, food. I wanna be vegan one day, I'm working for it. And I don't use more skin clothes ore fur (I never use fur), but I have hope, cause my friends and some other persons are open they heads and understanding all the evil in the use of animals... They are friends, not food, not fashion, not fun.

    1. It is sad how animals are being abused, and so so unfair. Animals are so kind, pure souls, they deserve all the happiness in the world. I hope all people will see it some day soon! I'm working on my veganism too, I do still own some leather shoes and such but I eat and support vegan food and idealism. We all have our own path. :)

I love your outfit,I would love to bundle up like that but it doesn't get that cold out here in California :( .it really does suck how some people don't see how important these animals are to our society.my husband once told me dodo birds did excist at some point.if that's true, wouldn't it be awesome if they still did? Now they're just a fairytale creature.hopefully animals at extinction today don't ever become just a fairytale.

Dodo birds did indeed exist before men ate them to extinction. What if there really were unicorns and such before? I just wonder how many species will share the same fate in the future? None, I hope, but I fear many species will disappear (and species do disappear in rain forests daily). For example elephants are in real danger right now, I'm donating to support the fight against poaching. I hope it all works out!

  7. Why exactly would you not wear recycled fur? I'm just curious. What's less bad about buying cheap, unecological and unethical H&M discount jackets (woolen, no less)? Do you have a philosophy behind this or is it just a question of giving (or not giving) out a certain image?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's ok to be curious, but why such a tone? It's not like I bought the jacket, and I don't see wearing it as a bad thing. :) I'm not the biggest fan of H&M either, but it doesn't hurt me to get something from there as most of my possessions are recycled. But I see fur, even recycled, as much more unethical and unecological in both material and message, counting all the pain and heaps of waste it produced. It is not something I'll ever wear, for my heart tells me not to.

I'm not trying to give out a certain image here, I'm just trying to live by my own standards of what's right. I wouldn't wear fur even in second hand because it would sicken me to the core. So I don't use it, simple as that!

  11. You look blindingly gorgeous and that coat from H&M is beautiful, it looks so cosy and warm, your Mum sure has an eye! I've never owned any real fur, or real leather come to think of it (at least I don't think so!) I totally agree 100% with everything that you've said! I sometimes feel completely and utterly speechless and ashamed by our race, the cruelty we can inflict on other living beings and on ourselves. We might be at the top of the food chain but our way of thinking towards animals hasn't evolved along with our brains. I am joined to quite a few animal charity groups on Facebook and day after day there are horrendous images of animal neglect and abuse, sometimes it makes me cry and other times it makes me want to scream. I just don't understand any of it, I couldn't dream of causing such pain to an animal :( Donating money to WWF and cat food to the local shelter makes me feel like I'm doing something to help but we should all be doing more!

I had to laugh at the Jon Snow thing, I totally thought of him too as soon as I saw your picture! XD I can't wait to see more of the White Walkers! ~ ♥ ~

    1. Oh thanks so much! My mom sure has an eye for these things, she and my sister both seem to know what I like!

I'm a bit of a masochist, but I read animal rights news every single day. And I cry a lot for the pain they reflect. Usually it just gives me the feeling to help and push those news forward, and I try to absorb the information without drowning myself under it's weight. You're right about how we haven't evolved much, Mahatma Gandhi once said that the true moral progress of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals. I would say we're not civilized at all, sadly. But it helps if everyone does something important! Donating is a good way, I think. :)

And haha, I almost made a look-alike picture of Jon Snow and me! There's this one picture of him that I saw immediately in the first photo. :D

No ei olisi!

      Delete
  13. Minustakin on järkyttävää, kuinka sudet ajetaan sukupuuton partaalle. Ja ihmisen vielä sanotaan olevan olennoista fiksuin! Julmin olisi osuvampaa.

    Kunpa luonnon monimuotoisuutta tosiaan arvostettaisiin.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Huh, nuo karhujahditkin on ihan absurdeja.

  19. I've always wondered what shoes you're wearing in snowy cold Finland, but these boots (although maybe only borrowed) suit you as fine as your high heels. :) I love the coat, too, I'm actually looking for something like that for some time now, it's just so difficult to find nice, warm coats that aren't made out of wool or some synthetic fibre... well, you find them, but they usually don't come in black.

There's some wolves' reintroduction going here as well like in some other countries (I love nature documentaries and watched "Wild Scandivia" a while ago and was so fascinated how much wildlife you still have up there), but people are anxious about the possibility of this coexistence. The thought of ferocious wild animals, threatening the existance of humans in the countryside, is still so deeply rooted in many minds. Some years ago, there was a bear roaming the border areas very near my parents' home, and all the medias made such a great fuzz about it, fueling the fear he could kill a human, that in the end, the only living bear in this country for many decades was shot by some idiotic hunter. :/ Even wildcats have been extinct here and are only slowly returning to the forests...
Every day I could go mad while witnessing how animals are treated like such inferior beings, the mere thought is so frustrating and depressing

But to end with something less gloomy: I'm eagerly waiting for the 6th book, especially concerning Jon Snow! The series can give me only so much consolation.

    1. I'm really having trouble at finding good winter boots. :D I'd take these from my sister in a split second if I could! I'm searching all the time but the perfect pair just doesn't seem to come up. Or maybe it's because I'm mainly searching in second hand boutiques..

Those old fears are the most dangerous ones, I hope people could just forget those and learn how to coexist with other species. I'm so sorry to hear about the situation in your country, luckily the wildcat (lynx) population in Finland is still pretty stable, but I'm frightened that the hunters will lower their numbers. :(

And to discuss about the less gloomy thing; I still haven't read ANY of the GoT books! I don't have the time right now, booo! They're waiting for me in our bookshelf, but I can only read them after I've finished my school. :D

      Delete
    2. Unfortunately, it's so typically human to recognize that something is deeply wrong after it is already too late. Almost all predators here had to be extinct before being reintroduced again. Some lynxes returned and actually those smaller wild cats that resemble so much their domesticated relatives. My uncle works as a biologist for the government and runs their reintroduction program in the south. He does bat rescues from buildings that are to be taken down, too (parking garages and such). <3

Haha, it has been the same for me, I've never wanted to commit myself to such an epic book series while still in university, but as soon as I had my graduation I plunged myself in the first three books and devoured them in about three weeks. :D

Sorry, I always tend to talk so much - hope you enjoy Helsinki, have a good trip!

En tiedä, oletko lukenut viime vuonna Hesarin kuukausiliitteessä ollutta juttua yhdestä salametsästäjästä, mulle tuli jotenkin niin paha olo sekä ihmisten että eläinten puolesta. 27. I know you probably used poetic language by choice, but how exactly is wolf a wise animal? I totally agree with you about hunting wolves and this hysteria in Finland is absolutely ridiculous, but I also resist mystifying animals. They're animals, not characters from books or cartoons. They do not have concepts of being beautiful or of wisdom, and I think it's problematic to reflect generic architypes on real animals. I think perceiving animals through this narrative, fiction-like filter is one way of being estranged from nature, even it of course is much more peaceful than this immense hatred we've seen.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. YES, I use poetic language automatically because it's natural to me. This wasn't a scientific article, but based on my feelings, like I stated, and although wolves might not have those concepts, human readers do.

I do understand your point of view, but to me nature has always been, and still is, a thing of endless wonder. :) I have no shame in describing it in such way because I do see it through a wondrous filter, so there's no point in scolding me on this. You might see natures reality in a more practical approach, but please respect my point of view too.

Sure wolves are violent beasts, that's their nature, but they are also very clever and sentient beings. So calling them wise isn't an overstatement, that's shown in the studies based on their behaviour and that's how I perceive them. Sure they're not in the top five most intelligent beings on this planet, but it's not wrong to call them wise although the concept of wisdom doesn't touch them personally.

  28. Oh you look lovely in curly hair and fake fur collar. It's so strange that they hunt wolves illegal and you have only 120 in your country. I have to admit that were I live it's an overflow of them. As they don't have any natural enemies exept humans and the cold, they have moved closer to society. They even attack dogs in leash. Chase riding horses etc. I have forbidden my children to visit the forest alone. Some say that wolves doesn't kill humans but you can only check death records. I'm not against wolves, definitely not. But when they are so many that their territories are filled and that they have to live that close, they are too many of them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thank you linnea-maria! :)

Wolves do attack dogs in leashes here too, but I think the only one to blame on that is the dog's carer for leaving the dog so unprotected. Dogs surrender their lives to wolves, as they know they're stronger, so it is a natural way for them to die. I think it's very wise to forbid your children to play alone in the woods, that's what I would definitely do if there were wolves prowling near the house. But the sad truth is also that people have taken too much space from the wild animals, and to me it feels natural that they come closer as their natural habitat closes like a noose. :/

  29. Minäkään en ymmärrä susipelkoa, sillä milloin susi on edes viimeksi hyökännyt ihmisen kimppuun?

  34. Beautiful.
Until humanity as a whole practices compassion for all living beings, sadly we will have killers amongst us. Thank you for caring and expressing your views here.

    1. I agree with you, mankind will not know peace before compassion is extended to all living creatures. Like Pythagoras said once: "For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.” "

Kiitos sinun!

  38. (First of all, I'm SO sorry it took so long to answer all your comments! I've been away from the blog due to horribly rushy days!)

And Lainie, I'm so incredibly sad to hear these hunts are going on in America too. I agree with you 100% that we have no right to snuff out life, unfortunately that isn't how most people perceive the world. It's sick that people have so much hate inside them. I've heard that Finns have shot some collared wolves too, those people don't have any respect for nature. A couple of days ago I actually saw a photo of an American hunter posing on a pile of wolves he had shot. It's a sick, sick world. :(

Who's with me?

Ja oi kyllä, haluan osallistua mielenosoitukseen!
