Stockholm syndrome

One of the highlights of this summer took place about two weeks ago, when my sister snatched me away with her to Stockholm, Sweden's beautiful capital. She got me flight tickets as a graduation gift, how sweet is that!  I was absolutely thrilled about the trip since I must have been one of the few Finns who had never been to Stockholm before. And also because I truly needed a break, a little adventure to draw my mind away from the everyday life.

We stayed in the city for a couple of days. Shopping felt trivial (though it accidentally bore some fruit, but I'll get back to that later) so our master plan was to wander aimlessly in those old, picturesque streets and eat. A lot. Here are some moods from the trip through a 50mm lens:

Vegan blueberry pie @ Hermitage

Stockholm has some great vegan and vegetarian options, but the best of all to me was Herman's
I almost wept when I tasted their buffet treats, had to take multiple portions!

The only thing that puzzled me a little was how similar the local people looked. They are often described as stylish and I'm sure they are to most people, but I felt like walking in the middle of a clone army straight from the fashion catalog. Of course everyone's fully entitled to dress the way they want, but still: creepy! I know there must be lots of people with very individual styles out there, but I just couldn't find many. The goal of my next trip to Stockholm is to find them. ;)

They were playing this song!
My pretty sister

Otherwise, how could I not enjoy my time there? The narrow alleys of Gamla stan, comic book stores, vintage boutiques, veg sushi and countless beautiful old buildings all over the city. One of the best parts was when the royal orchestra started playing Danny Elfman's Batman theme the second we walked into the crowd (somehow they knew my secret identity, *gasp*!).

Much like the syndrome, the city captivates you in its beauty and you might quickly grow to love it. And it almost made me write this entire post in Swedish.

  1. Awesome pictures of Stockholm! I lived in Uppsala for many years so I spent a lot of time in Stockholm... I never tire of those narrow streets and alleys in old town!

  6. No voi että, kiitos vain reissukuumeen nostattamisesta! En pääse tänä kesänä karkuun toimiston ankeutta, joten päätin juuri kaverin kanssa syysreissusta Tukholmaan. Näyttää ihan huisilta!

    1. Ollos hyvä! Ihana palkintoreissu, ansaitset sen ehdottomasti jos jaksat istua toimistossa koko kesän, mulla leviäisi pää. :D Toivottavasti teille tulee huippu reissu!

  8. Ah Tukholma..

  14. Aww, I visited Stockholm eleven years ago for three days and spent magical hours and hours in those tiny alleyways in Gamla stan. <3 Since then I'm dreaming about going back, but there are so many places in the world that want to be visited, so I simply haven't found the time yet. Finland is also still waiting to be checked off... *sighs*

And sometimes I envy Scandinavians so much for I'm getting the feeling over and over again that you learn all those languages apparently naturally. I understand some written Danish and Swedish by deducing the words from German and English, but I'm far from really knowing those languages, let alone writing. I put all the blame on the elaborate dubbing of our TV programs. ;)
(My Finish is sadly restricted to "Minä olen Momiji", "kiitos", "kippis" and some, well, specialties some Finish friends tried to teach me.)

    1. I know the feeling, there's endlessly many exciting places to explore and so damn little resources and time.

Finland is actually a bilingual country, so we have some obligatory courses in Swedish. But only a few, so some people don't practically speak Swedish at all, and some speak it fluently and some are born Finnish Swedes. Finnish is completely different than the other languages in Nordic countries (I can't say Scandinavia, apparently Finland isn't part of it?), there may be some similarities in some words but otherwise it feels and sounds different. :)

    2. Back at university, I've once enrolled in a Finnish class because I had always loved its sound - I really like languages with rolling Rs and many consonsants - and the peculiar grammar (not to mention some nice bands from Finland :D). Sadly I realized already in the first lesson that I would have to give it up again, for it simply meant too much work while already studying two other completely different languages as major and minor... :/ Languages are a little bit like countries to visit, your resources whatsoever will always be restricted.

  17. It's wonderful to read about our capitol town through a foreighers eyes. I can fully agree with your opinion on the look of the people on the streets, however certain areas, parts of the town have certain people. Old town is mainly tourists. Södermalm is were the hipsters and alternative people reside, you can also do some nice shopping and eating there. Östermalm is were the rich people lives expensive botiques and old fashion ladies. Norrmalm especially around Odenplan is a antique store mecka, there you can find shops with real antique clothes. Did you visit the Beyond Retro store in the city? Lots of broken sweaters but also some real gems can be found.
Hope you'll pay another visit in Stockholm.

    1. Glad to hear you liked this post! I figured as much, there must be some parts where there are more people with alternative styles (as this is the case in most big cities). We spend a lot of time in Södermalm but I still didn't bump into many. But there were a lot of hipsters indeed, hehe. We accidentally walked right in front of Beyond Retro, so of course we visited it! There were a lot of interesting vintage treasures to be found (and a looot of over-prized repro too) but I didn't buy anything this time. Thank you for the tip about Norrmalm, I'll have to check out the antique stores! Although I'm not sure where it is exactly so I might have been there already..

I'm sure I'll come back to Stockholm someday! :>

    Replies

Ihania kuvia, itse olen käynyt Ruotsissa abouttirallaa 10 vuotta sitten, eli lapsena joten muistikuvat eivät ole ne parhaimmat. :) Täytyisi joskus käydä kyllä uudestaan kun näin aikuisena ei tarvitse enää mennä kenenkään muun ehdoilla kiertelemään. ;)
